"Finding a program that truly supports an individual’s growth, independence, and sense of belonging is rare. J13 is that missing link for our family. It’s a place where Matthew is accepted fully for who he is, encouraged to set meaningful goals, and supported in reaching new milestones.
With J13, Matthew is exploring his independence, riding in the “cool J13 van” was once unimaginable, but now it’s a highlight. He’s even trying things we never would have attempted as a family, like indoor rock climbing. His words say it best: “I feel nervous, but am brave.”
J13 provides him community, confidence, and pride in his progress. For us as parents, it offers something equally valuable: the peace of knowing he’s thriving without us, which is the greatest preparation for his future.

When your adult child has high support needs, life doesn’t follow the same path as your peers. While others embrace the freedom of an empty nest, we still face the daily challenges that come with ensuring our son has the support he needs, especially after our son Sam turned 21 and his services dwindled. Sam’s behavior can make it difficult for him to be accepted into many programs, even those designed for people with special needs. We constantly worried about his future, his friendships, and what would happen when we were no longer here.
Then we found J13 Community.
The staff saw and embraced Sam exactly as he is. They work with him consistently and compassionately, helping him grow while filling his days with purpose, friends, and activity. Through the Respite to Residential program, we’ve even been able to travel, something we never thought possible. During a recent 8-day trip, Sam’s behavior and anxiety was managed and supported in a way that made his week a total success! He was calm, happy, and fully supported by J13’s incredible team.
Though Sam has limited language, we know he feels safe, loved, and truly seen. J13 feels like a second home, for him and for us. For the first time, we feel hopeful about his future."
